Union Officials Credit Independence
Institute Postcard to Teachers In the April-May 2006 edition of CEA Journal, Colorado teachers union officials once again acknowledged the Independence Institute's important work of providing information to teachers. CEA officials published a letter from one of the teachers who received our colorful postcard that contained the message: "Did you know that NEA spends members' dues money on groups and causes that have nothing to do with education?" CEA's official response to the teacher's honest question predictably attacked the messenger as "Too Extreme for Colorado" and then said: "The institute relied on a Wall Street Journal editorial and a Bill O'Reilly (Fox News) broadcast for its information." While the response went on to mention the National Education Association's lengthy LM 2 financial disclosure report to the U.S. Department of Labor, it neglected to point out that the Independence Institute not only examined the report to highlight the available information but also provided a Web link and instructions for teachers to access the report for themselves. To their credit, union officials admitted that NEA contributed to Jesse Jackson's Rainbow PUSH Coalition, People for the American Way, and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation - described as "organizations that share our Association's commitment to public education and to human and civil rights." But omitted from the CEA Journal's published explanation were the millions of dollars spent on political activities and union officials' salaries.
